Point Loma Native Plant Garden
It’s easy to miss this gem tucked away on a Point Loma hillside alongside Nimitz Blvd. Most people drive right by and never know it’s there, but it’s well worth a visit if you happen to be in the area. The garden sits on just over 3 acres, but it contains an extensive collection of native flowers, shrubs and trees. There are walking paths throughout the property as well as several benches to sit on and take a break.
Depending on the season, you’re almost sure to see local wildlife in the garden as well. In fact, the native milkweed that grows there attracts dozens of monarch butterflies which can often be seen in the middle and lower sections of the garden. Several bird species also frequent the garden.
The garden was established in the 70’s and is part of Collier Park. It is run entirely by volunteers and is the responsibility of the San Diego River Park Foundation. They do an excellent job of maintaining the garden and labeling all the plant life. They also organize several gardening events and opportunities to volunteer, including several family-friendly events.
